AND TREATMENTS
Advanced Care When Your Pet Needs It
When your pet is sick or injured, you want answers fast. South Side Animal Hospital in south Edmonton is equipped with in-house diagnostics and experienced veterinarians who can quickly identify what is wrong and begin treatment.
We treat your pet like family. We will work with you to create a treatment plan that fits both your pet’s medical needs and your family’s situation.
In-House Diagnostic Testing
Fast, accurate results help us make the right treatment decisions for your pet.
Our registered veterinary technologists perform:
• Complete blood counts to check for infection, anemia, and blood clotting ability
• Blood chemistry panels to evaluate kidney, liver, pancreas, and electrolyte function
• Urinalysis to detect urinary tract infections, kidney disease, diabetes, and bladder stones
• Fecal analysis to identify intestinal parasites
• Cytology to examine cells from skin masses, ear infections, or body fluids
• Viral testing for diseases like feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, parvovirus, and distemper
When results are needed quickly, we have them within minutes. For more comprehensive testing, we send samples to accredited laboratories like Antech and Idexx, with results typically available within 24 hours.
Digital X-Rays
Our veterinarians use digital x-ray technology to diagnose:
• Broken bones
• Bladder stones
• Foreign objects your pet may have swallowed
• Heart and lung disease
• Arthritis and joint problems
• Abdominal masses or organ abnormalities
Digital x-rays produce clear images instantly, allowing us to begin treatment without delay. In complex cases, we can send images to board-certified radiologists for expert interpretation.
Ultrasound Imaging
We check your exotic pet’s:
• Teeth (many small mammals have continuously growing teeth that can develop painful problems)
• Weight and body condition
• Skin and fur quality
• Eyes and ears
• Heart and lung sounds
• Abdomen
• Overall activity level and behavior
We also discuss proper diet, housing, enrichment, and preventive care specific to your small friend’s species.
Ultrasound allows us to see inside your pet’s body without surgery. We use ultrasound to examine:
• The heart
• Liver, kidneys, spleen, and other abdominal organs
• The bladder and reproductive organs
• Suspicious masses or tumors
Our veterinarians have received advanced training in ultrasound imaging. We also work with FVS Imaging (Friesen Veterinary Services), who provides specialized imaging and can perform ultrasound-guided biopsies and aspirates when needed.
Hospitalization and Intensive Care
Sick pets may need to stay with us for monitoring and treatment during the day. Our registered veterinary technologists care for hospitalized patients under direct supervision of our veterinarians.
We provide:
• Intravenous fluid therapy to treat dehydration and support organ function
• Pain control to keep your pet comfortable
• Oxygen therapy for pets with breathing difficulties
• Medication administration including injections, oral medications, and continuous infusions
• Monitoring throughout the day to track your pet’s response to treatment
We will keep you updated on your pet’s condition and progress.
